Stewart Darren Sommerfeld was born 5 minutes after his identical twin brother, James Micheal Sommerfeld, March 11th 1996, in Edmonton Alberta. He was the baby of the family.
Both boys were born beautiful and healthy. They entered a world loved by their mother Astrid Johanna Sommerfeld, their father Micheal James Phillips, their two older sisters Monika and Courtenay, and a large extended family.

In 2001 Stewart’s nuclear family moved to New Westminster, British Columbia.  Here, the boys became intertwined with the Pacific Northwest. Stew fell in love with camping, hiking, off-roading and other outdoor activities. Until the end of his life, Stew found solace in nature.
When James and Stewart were young, they began playing football and basketball, which they excelled in athletically and socially. In football, Stew was a Tight End and Linebacker, #20. And in basketball he was a Power Forward, #15.

In 2013 Stew began his job as a camp counselor and lifeguard at Camp Potlatch. He gained a lot of close friendships at the camp among the councilors and staff. He worked summers there until 2017–he kept these friends until the end of his life.

Stew graduated high school early and headed off to BCIT where he completed their level 1 + level 2 carpentry programs and began working in concrete. Throughout his twenties he progressed with his carpentry knowledge and education and in 2019 he started his own business Stewart Sommerfeld Construction.

Stewart Sommerfeld Construction provided employment for many people that were loyal to Stewart because of who he was as a person. Stewart’s business gained considerable success because of his hard working, honest, and good-natured ethics.

Stew embodied high morale, kindness and selflessness in all components of his life–in sport, social relationships, and as a business owner.

Stewart passed away on the morning of June 18, 2025, while taking his beloved dog Jackie for her morning walk.

Stewart’s gigantic kind heart will never be forgotten.

I knew Stewart and James when they were still in elementary. While I was dating Monika. Often using my spare block to book us all computers at the library so we could play runescape. While I knew them, I treated them as younger siblings. Often mentoring them about rights and wrongs.
I'm so happy to read Stewart was able to follow his dreams and forge his own path forward with friends at his side.
Yet heartbroken, for the hole his missing presence has left in his family after his passing.

Stew, you were loved by so many, and I am so happy to have known you.

Dating James over the last several years you have been there for not only him but me in so many ways. You were a brother to me, helped me when I needed it, and were always for the both of us. I can only think of the amazing memories we had together. You were a light hearted, caring, and fun soul that will truly be missed in our lives. Love you Stew.
