Norma Frances Carriere (née Hassard)
August 9, 1952 – August 18, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Norma Frances Carriere on August 18, 2024, at the age of 72. Born in Weston, Ontario, to Audrey Catherine Mackenzie and Richard Edgar Hassard, Norma was a woman of strength, intelligence, and unwavering independence, whose life was defined by her deep commitment to helping others.
Norma proudly served as a nurse in the Canadian military from 1975 to 1995, dedicating 20 years of her life to caring for those who served their country. Her compassion and skill were evident in all she did, both during her military career and afterward when she continued to work as a registered nurse. Norma's dedication to nursing was not just a career but a calling, and she touched the lives of many with her care and kindness.
She was a devoted mother to her only son, Michael, and cherished the time spent with her daughter-in-law, Lisa, and her two beloved grandsons, Noah and Jude. Norma's family meant the world to her, and she was deeply proud of her grandsons, who brought her endless joy.
After the passing of her husband Jean, in 2013, Norma demonstrated her remarkable resilience and independence. She was a strong-willed woman, always ready to stand her ground, and her intelligence and quick wit were well known to those who loved her. Norma also had a deep love for her dogs, who were her faithful companions throughout the years.
Norma’s legacy is one of service, strength, and love. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
No formal service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to the Alzheimer Society of British Columbia.

Dear Michael, Lisa, Noah and Jude - We are so saddened to learn of your Mom's passing. We remember with fondness when you lived across the street from us on Zeballos Drive. Those were good days. Norma was such a genuine person. No pretention, just kindness and caring. She realling looked out for us. We remember how hard it was for her when Jean (your Dad) passed. We really missed her when she moved away but knowing also that it was the best thing for her. We will always remember Norma with nothing but admiration for the fine person she was. May she rest in peace. Love from George and Gloria Sveinbjornson.

My eyes are blurring as I write this and see a cardinal sitting on the hydro line out front. I worked with Norma in Summerside where she was a strict boss but always fair. I visited her in Victoria ( can't remember when) and we sat on the front porch reminiscing. She told me that when she was newly pregnant and unaware, how she couldn't figure out why she was so tired. We laughed so hard when she told me it took someone else to realize she could be pregnant. Nurses are so bad at diagnosing correctly when it comes to our own bodies. She was so happy to be expecting! If I may I am going to reprint what I wrote on Facebook for her birthday. I don't think she saw it which saddens me that I didn't tell her sooner. "You are a special person you know! Back when I was being deployed you gave me a wee card on which you printed out Numbers 6:24,25, and 26! You also wrote a loving prayer for peace on the back. I carried that with me and still carry it in my wallet! So I want to wish you the same today on your Birthday! May the Lord bless you and take care of you (today and forever!) I added the bracketed part!🤗Enjoy YOUR day Boss:-))" Hopefully now she'll see it and Maj Hazard as we called her is singing with the angels and sending us cardinals! I am so very sorry for your loss!

I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Norma.
I first met Norma in Trenton and later worked with her in Summerside. She was an outstanding nurse and an even better human being.
She will always be a warm memory in my heart.
My sincerest condolences,

Dear Norma as we grew up from living on Macdonald Avenue, you with your friends on the new tricycles.
Moving to Larose Avenue graduating to a new bicycle.Going on to Richview Collegiate.Seeing you go off to Nursing school and becoming a younge woman.
I remember that Volkswagon bug packed with you possessions on your way across the country to an adventure as lieutenant Norma Hassard.
The various postings you had always seemed so exotic
That wedding in Sumerside and all the family together MacKenzie Carriere Hassard that was a party we all loved.
And then as time went by we all aged and lost our loves and looked to our inner self for solace..
Sister you are never far from my heart. Bob

My condolences to you Michael and family
Your mother and I met in grade 6 when the teacher asked if there was anyone living on Larose Ave. Or nearby. I raised my hand and walked her home. We became best friends back then. Over the years we communicated by letters. She was a wonderful lady and will be missed but will be in our hearts forever. 💖 Yvonne
