It is with both great sadness and also great gratitude for the life he lived and the love he
gave, that we announce the passing of John Francis Dunnigan at age 92 at Peace Arch Hospital
in White Rock, B.C. The family would like to express their great appreciation for the excellent
care he received from the staff at the hospital. John was born in Montreal, Quebec in 1933. He
met his wife Nancy when they both worked for a pharmaceutical firm, and they were married in
1957, celebrating 64 years of marriage before Nancy passed in 2022.

John held a variety of jobs and positions in his life, including purchasing agent, insurance
salesman, and even owning his own ice cream cart, before accepting a position with the Federal
Department of Transport; his fluency in both French and English was a big asset. After a year of
training in Ottawa, John was offered the position of Personnel Administrator for Air Traffic
Control in one of three cities: Halifax, Winnipeg, or Vancouver. He chose wisely, and John and
Nancy purchased a home in Central Richmond, close to the airport as well as schools, the
hospital and parks. John retired in 1997 after 24 years of service. In 2023 he sold the home in
Richmond, and moved to a retirement home in South Surrey.

John was a great father to his children, and is survived by three of his five sons, David
(Kim), Richard (Lenora) and Larry (Tom), as well as his grandchildren Teresa (Mo), Brandin and
Danielle (mother Tammy), great-granddaughters Amelia and Aurora, his brothers Gerry and
Kevin, and sisters Dianne and Adele. His wife Nancy and his sons Terry and Craig pre-deceased
him.

John and Nancy loved travel: family camping trips were the norm, first in a tent, later a
tent trailer before finally graduating to a truck camper. In this way the family visited most of
Canada over the years, and many of Canada’s National Parks. He also loved to cook and had an
eclectic taste in food which he passed on to his children: he was especially noted for his rack of
lamb recipe. Later in life, he and Nancy traveled even farther, cruising to many parts of the
world, from Croatia, Ireland and Australia, to the Galapagos, Brazil, and Antarctica. When his
children were growing up, John coached them in sports like hockey, acted as equipment
manager for a football team, and took his kids golfing and skiing, instilling in them a life-long
interest in sports and being active and outdoors.

Known for his ready smile and quick laugh, kindness and compassion and his love of
knowledge, food and life, he will truly be missed by his family and by all those who knew and
loved him. Rest in peace, John. In lieu of flowers, donations to one of your favorite charities
would be much appreciated.
