Isobel Helen Van Wart (nee Clark), affectionately known as “Issie”, was born June 18, 1935, and grew up in Hawick, Scotland.  She always maintained a strong connection to Hawick, becoming a Teri at heart when she moved away at the age of 18 years to attend nursing school at Edinburgh Royal Hospital.  Issie trained as a midwife in York and Kingston upon Thames in England and in her early years of nursing carried out home deliveries.

Issie always had a love for travel and adventure.  She worked as a nurse in Bermuda where she made dear and lifelong friends.  From Bermuda she moved to Collingwood, Ontario, and then eventually to Vancouver where she worked at Shaughnessy Hospital and met her husband Arthur Van Wart.   Arthur (Art) was in the isolation ward sick with Hepatitis and Issie nursed him back to health.   They married soon after on November 12th 1966 in Hawick and had a beautiful partnership for over 58 years.

Issie and Art raised their family of four children, Louise, Helen, Harriet and Jamie, in Kerrisdale.  They made many close friends in the community, and Issie was an active member of the Kerrisdale Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School for over thirty years.

Issie raised her four children with a fortitude that impressed many.  She was known for biking, walking, or taking the bus  to carry out  her errands and chores.  She was a true anchor for her family, always having dinners prepared and insisting all the family eat together each night.  This was particularly admired by Art’s work colleagues.  Being a family physician, Art worked long hours, but he was always home for dinner (and then would head out after dinner for his evening house calls).

Issie had many activities, and they created lasting friendships.  She took joy in her Scottish country dance group, as well as tennis, walking, bridge, and book clubs.  She had a flair for hosting parties, always making any activity she did that much more fun.  Her home was a place all felt welcome, and where many laughs and good memories were shared.

In 1977, Issie and Art decided to spend summers with the children at Crescent Beach, and in their later years lived at Crescent Beach year-round.  Upon discovering Crescent Beach they quickly fell into the gravitational pull of the Crescent Beach Swimming Club (CBSC) where they found a deep and meaningful community.  Issie made many contributions to CBSC over the years, and became widely and affectionately known as the “hot chocolate lady” for serving hot chocolate from the beach for the CBSC tanker swimmers.  In the early days this may have been eight or ten swimmers at a time.  More recently, this would be up to fifty swimmers. Most said she served the “best hot chocolate ever”.

Issie passed away peacefully on December 26th at Peace Arch Hospital, surrounded by her family (even those in Halifax by phone).  She was predeceased by her mother Margaret (Peggy) Clark (nee Weir), father James Clark, and brother David Clark.

Survived by her sister-in-law Babs Clark, husband Arthur, children Louise (and Ross McLaren), Helen (and David Iwankow), Harriet (and Sheldon Tetreault), Jamie (and Lisa Jacobs) and grandchildren Nicholas, Riel, Isaac, Maggie, Willem, Lewis and Elsie.

Issie’s family welcomes all to attend her memorial service at the Kerrisdale Presbyterian Church (2733 West 41st Ave, Vancouver) on Saturday, February 8th at 2:00 pm.

I first met Issie over 40 years ago at the Dunbar tennis courts. She was in a foursome and I was in another. It was Issie who suggested that we amalgamate the groups and so began a tennis group which is still going today. Over the years, many more ladies joined until we had over 25 members. Later, the members formed the Ramblers walking group and several Bridge foursomes. A highlight each year was a sleepover at the Van Wart's place at Crescent Beach which involved lots of activity and laughter but very little sleep! Issie was responsible for all of these good times. She was an amazing organizer and a great friend. I will miss her very much; it was a privilege to be part of her life.

To all the Vanwart family from all of us Gordon‘s. Remembering Izzy is also like remembering the start of our life in Crescent beach and at swim club. Izzy and art were both so inclusive and warming to our family as we navigated our way through the ins and outs of Crescent Beach life and becoming involved in the swim club. It has been our life for the last 45 years. Izzy was involved in so many things e’d when I look back between Bridge PNO‘s hot chocolate after tanker, swim, property owners association, coffee groups she was a true crescent Beecher. Right to the very end she showed her love of Crescent Beach and the people around her. She was an amazing lady. We will all remember her as a determined, dedicated and lovely friend.

Isobel was my lovely sister in law who I first met in the early 1960s when I was engaged to her brother Dave. Her parents were delighted that she returned to Hawick from Canada for her wedding to Arthur in 1966. A wonderful day and I was proud to be her bridesmaid.

She was so kind and generous with a lovely sense of humour. We shared many great family holidays and memories together in the Scottish Borders and Canada.

My thoughts are with Arthur and his family. She is sadly missed by everyone that knew and loved her.

As a fixture in my summer life, the Van Wart family are our cherished neighbours, fellow club members and dear friends. I will remember Issie’s love of a good party and her energy at PNO, backyard parties and dancing in the lane. I will remember playing bridge with her, Art and Helen and when she was still able too her slowly stepping over the dike to take a dip in the ocean. I will remember and honour her with Art and their children for years to come knowing she would want us celebrating life’s little and big joys together.

i think it is fair to say that while I did meet Issie a few times over the years, I have a better sense of her fortitude, grace, generosity and joie de vivre through knowing her daughter Louise over a lifetime. As long as Issie and Art’s children and grandchildren live on, surely so shall Issie’s spirit. ♥️♥️♥️🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
