Richard Dale Ross passed away on January 14, 2023, at the age of 78, in Surrey, B.C. Dale was a cancer survivor and fighter, but after months of declining health, died peacefully with family at his side.

It is hard to summarize a life lived so well with so few lines. Richard Dale Ross was a dedicated father, loving partner, and loyal friend- some friendships spanning 60 years. He was equal parts serious and mischievous jokester. Often you could not tell if Dale was serious or not, all part of his mischievous nature. He loved to see people’s reactions before his own grin crept across his face. Never to be one to sit idle in the house, he was always on the go; working out, nature walks, thrifting, taking a scenic drive, restoring his 66’ mustang, going for coffee, visiting family, and travelling (which he wished he did more of) were all great loves of his.

Dale was born in Vancouver on April 01st, 1944. He was raised by loving parents Ella and Douglas Ross, and was the youngest of 5 (Owen, Jack, Thelma, and Betty), all of whom have preceded him in death. Dale was very proud of his heritage, and dreamed of taking a trip to the town of Chase, which was named after Whitfield Chase, one of his ancestors. Unfortunately, he passed away before he could make the trip.

Dale worked various jobs from operating a crane, working in the mills, and roofing with one of his best friends, before settling on a career in corrections. His 30+ year career started at the BC Pen, but the bulk of his time was spent at Kent and Mission Institution, then finally retired from Ferndale Institution. For many years he served as part of the Emergency Response Team. Dale was well respected by all, and was recognized with the Exemplary Service Award.

Dale’s family will place his ashes with his first born child Cyril Douglas Wayne Ross, who sadly passed away at just 7 months old, at his request. He is survived by his loving partner Shirley Trewern and her family, his children Danny Ross, Deanna Delaney, and Colby McLennan; grandchildren Ariel Kunic, Paige Ross, Brooklyn Ross, Maddex Ross, Shay Delaney, and Nevaya Delaney.

Dale requested no formal funeral service. An informal celebration of life will occur later in the summer with family and friends.
